Rachel Whiteread was born in London in 1963. She first came to public atention soon after leaving Slade school of fine art with the sculpture, "House," - this was a full sized replica of the interior of a condemned terraced house in London's East End. (The house itself was demolished in 1994). And over the last ten years she has gone on to develop a significant international reputation, creating major public works in locations across the world. She represented the UK at the 1997 Venice Biennale and the piece "Water Tower" (1998) has recently been reinstalled on the roof of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
