FRANCESCO CLEMENTE (b. 1952)

Portrait

Francesco Clemente was born in 1952 in Naples, Italy. After an early academic background in classical languages and literature, he studied architecture. Throughout the 1970s Clemente exhibited drawings, altered photographs and conceptual works in various galleries across Europe. Most recently, a survey of the artist's work was organized by the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli (2002-2003).

Clemente's work is very similar in style to Salvador Dali and, perhaps to a lesser extent, Rene Magritte. It is to an extent surrealist. His work startles the viewer. Creates a visionary and perhaps nightmareish landscape. Disturbing figures appear but what they say is left to the viewer to decide.
