PHILIP TAAFFE (b. 1955)
Philip Taaffe was born in 1955 in New Jersey. His first solo exhibition was in New York in 1982. He has been included in numerous museum exhibitions, including the Carnegie International and his work is in a number of public collections. Taaffe specialises in the appropriation and reinterpretation of other artists work. So, for example, in 1986 he re-examined a piece of work by Bridget Riley - making a statement on the impersonality of Op art. Similarily he challenged the 'Who is Afraid of Red, Yellow and Blue' series by Barnett Newman with his own 'We are not afraid' of 1985. Philip Taaffe presently resides and works in New York City.
